Two Conventions, two themes, two completely different views of America

Written by Bethany Bowra on . Posted in Staff Op-Eds

Publisher's note: This is a bit of a long read, however we simply feel that it is too well done and too important not to publish in its entirety right now.

The party conventions are over and we now have less than two months until Election Day. Democrats and Republicans are (seemingly) solid in their respective camps, and Independent voters will be the huge focus until November 6th. While I didn't have the pleasure of attending the Democratic National Convention, I did go to the Republican National Convention and was able to experience firsthand the speeches, excitement, and overall energy of the week. Talk has now turned to comparing the two conventions and deciding which was more "beneficial" for its party. After watching both conventions, I noticed that each had its own recurring theme: The Republican convention focused on the failed record of President Obama and how we can do better, while the Democrat convention focused on women's "rights" and how President Obama "killed" Osama bin Laden (with no shortage of attacks on Governor Romney, either).

It's easy to compare some of the "big" speakers at each convention and reveal the underlying theme in each one. The first comparison that comes to mind is Governor Nikki Haley vs. Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren. Haley is the first Indian-American governor in U.S. history and has a background that includes hard work and achieving her own American Dream. Warren is a Senate candidate in Massachusetts who is 1/32nd Cherokee Indian and has tried to use her "minority" status in the past on job applications to gain an upper hand. Here are some quotes from each woman's speech that clearly show the different themes and goals of their speeches.

Almost forty-five years after my parents first became Americans, I stand before you and them tonight as the proud governor of the state of South Carolina.

Gov. Chris Christie's Advice: Leave Nothing in the Tank

Written by Starla M. Brown on . Posted in Staff Op-Eds

I have never been accused of being quiet, but when Gov. Chris Christie told Florida delegates and attendees to "leave nothing in the tank" on Thursday morning as he addressed a breakfast event, I understood not only did we need to cheer from the convention floor, we need to give this presidential election everything we got.

With all that we have, with all that we can give we must campaign and reach out to every American to elect the Romney-Ryan ticket in November.  The time is now and as the saying goes if not me and if not you, then who?  And I do mean every American, all party politics must be put aside and we must reach out to voters to understand the implications of four more years of an Obama administration.  Unless of course you are for the Affordable Healthcare Act or expanding government to levels that boggle the mind and solving the debt with tax increases, then I suggest you start working for the free enterprise and limited government ticket that Romney-Ryan represents, and keep an America we recognize.  Four more years of Obama and we get the CHANGE just not the HOPE.

If you don't have your game plan yet I urge you to volunteer and do so immediately.  It's the fourth quarter and we are marching down the field to the goal line.  Coming off the convention we are inspired by great speakers and by an amazing team in Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan.  Let's take this enthusiasm and inject it into everyone we meet and reach across party lines while doing so.  We need to win Florida and we need everyone to do their part to get the facts and the truth out to the voters.

We can't sit by and be quiet and hope for the best outcome, we have to be in the game.  If you don't know where to start, then find the local Victory Center in your area and call or stop by to learn how you can be involved.  Phone calls, sign waving, canvassing door to door, rally's and a willingness to speak to people are just some of the things you can do to serve as a volunteer in this election.  This is not the time to be apathetic and let others determine this race, this is your time to leave nothing in the tank and I hope everyone is running on fumes November 6, 2012 because you gave everything possible.

Copwatch Training part of the Occupy Schedule

Written by Starla M. Brown on . Posted in Staff Op-Eds

As we move towards the opening days of the RNC, Tampa is gearing up for a welcome week of Republicans as we occupy Tampa from out hotel rooms.  That's right we have reservations and rooms, not tents.  We will enjoy all that Tampa has to offer and supply a boost to the local economy.  While we celebrate the conservative cause the nomination of Mitt Romney, what will the opposing view be doing?  From the looks of the Internet communications, they plan to protest.

According the website http://resistrnc.org the pièce de résistance includes everything from Canning, Preserving & Pickling to Traveling with Medicinal Plants and Copwatch Training.  While I am not certain about the Film Screening: Vote for Jesus I do note that it will be held at Voice of Freedom Park with Vermin Supreme according to the schedule.  And just in case law enforcement has any qualms about this organized group of liberal protestors, they can read the ever-informative press release to law enforcement http://resistrnc.org/press-release-august-25-2012/ where it clearly states they are peaceful and not coming to commit acts of violence, because they are after the "Power Elite".  The press release defines clearly whom they come to confront:  Elected Officials and Power Elite.  So if you fall in this category, they have a 'peaceful' bone to pick with you.  I am searching to figure out if all Republicans are Power Elite or do they have a special event in which they designate who is included in this group.

Certain questions come to mind, would I qualify if I had a job, paid my taxes, strive to be the best at anything in life, have a certain amount of competitive spirit?  Or would I be the Power Elite if I were trying to keep the America I know from extinction and capitalism alive and well?  While I have chosen not to attend their themes of Anti-War / Peace Day because I believe in a strong military defense, I am still not certain where to draw the line of power or elite.  And, if I am not up to their absurd standards because 'Code' Pink means my lip gloss is wearing off, not that I should wear a piece of pink tape over my mouth in protest, then call me elite.  By definition it isn't exactly a bad thing and I will never downgrade how hard my grandparents and parents worked to provide an education and an opportunity for me to advance in life.  I am thankful for God's grace every single day that I was born to hard working middle class Americans who built this country in its early economic days.

So while the leftist liberals attend the Foods not Bombs cook off, I will be working hard in support of our Republican nominee.  Occupy the RNC can keep their permaculture and puppetry agenda, we will keep America strong and prosperous.  GOP have a great week in Tampa, proud to be a member and we will see the Romney-Ryan ticket to victory in November.

Retirees build for Paul Ryan and say no to 'mediscare'

Written by Starla M. Brown on . Posted in Staff Op-Eds

We hear "You didn't build… that" a great deal since Obama's gaffe of late when commenting on business and his suggestion that no business was built by anyone without the government's role.  This past weekend while attending the Paul Ryan rally in The Villages, Florida I watched the crowd and a very different perspective came to mind.

It's no secret to Floridians The Villages, which encompasses Sumter County and parts of Lake and Marion counties is a force among retirement communities, but it is also home to a number of retirees who did "build that".  Let's be real when I viewed the generation of residents who had gathered with signs and flags, many dressed in red, white and blue, it was evident not only did they build their businesses, but this generation of Americans were quite instrumental in building America as the greatest nation.  And, from the looks on their faces and the reaction of the crowd, they do not intend to let what they built go down without a fight.

After all this generation is comprised of proud Americans many of whom are veterans and who not only served their country militarily, but then went on to build businesses all across America and retire to the American dream and enjoy their golden years.  When singer Lee Greenwood sang his signature I'm Proud to be an American men and women shed tears and lips trembled to fight back the emotions of what may very well be a grandfather or grandmother worried about the future for a generation of grandchildren or great-grandchildren they worked so hard to build.  A future built to give the next generation every opportunity for success, now riddled with uncertainties over debt and uncontrolled government spending.  Watching I have to admit I was smiling, with a tearful eye.

Why? Because I saw what will decide this election in November, and I saw an energized group of older Americans who know how to build a strong nation, and will show up to vote.  They will take this election very serious and Obama if I were you I would have a clear understanding that your 'mediscare' tactics are not working.  Paul Ryan is doing an excellent job of getting out the message that we must reform Medicare while you have, well basically Joe Biden, not even a contest to these people.  They like Paul Ryan and his Mom, Betty is part of their generation.  When Paul Ryan addressed the crowd on Saturday in reference to his Mom's own small business he said, "And mom -- you did build that".  I saw a generation of Americans who agreed that they built their business, not the government and will make sure that opinion is voted out of our government at every level.  If the road to the White House truly leads through Florida, it will certainly trek through The Villages, and Main Street likes Romney-Ryan.

Gutless

Media Matters senior fellow Eric Boehlert made news this week by immensely insulting our Navy SEALs, saying that they "don't have guts" if they won't admit they're "anti-Obama." This is coming from someone who has his job solely because those SEALs and the rest of our military risk everything to protect this country and the freedoms we enjoy in it.

President Obama has yet to condemn Eric Boehlert's disrespectful comments; this is hardly shocking, though, since when Osama bin Laden was killed in Pakistan in 2011 by our SEALs, President Obama stepped in and tried to claim  most of the credit. An unidentified current SEAL told Newsmax:

"Obama wasn’t in the field, at risk, carrying a gun. As president, at every turn, he should be thanking the guys who put their lives on the line to do this. He does so in his official speeches because his speechwriters are smart.  But the more he tries to take the credit for it, the more the ground operators are saying, "Come on, man!"  It really didn’t matter who was president. At the end of the day, they were going to go."
