Memorial Day...a time to honor and reflect, not politicize

Written by David DiCrescenzo on . Posted in National News

I would like someone to tell me how back yard BBQ’s and beer, car and furniture sales, and the empty, insincere words of bloviating politicians has anything to do with honoring our men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

Can anyone tell me when and why this solemn day; one set aside to remember and reflect upon those many sacrifices became a day of unabashed celebration and retail madness?

The way I see it, Memorial Day should be a time of national quiet reflection, of mourning those brave souls lost in the defense of our great nation.  It should embody the essence, or at very least, the calm tone of a wake.

The biggest item on my schedule today was to gather with several friends at the National Cemetery in Lake Worth to honor our fallen heroes together.  As always, there were some very touching moments; from the lifting of scores of orange balloons in honor of those stricken by disease via ‘agent orange’ during the Vietnam War, the color guard procession to introduce our flag, to the flyover by vintage warplanes including a Huey.  The sound of bagpipes bellowing out Amazing Grace and the PBSO offering a shotgun salute left barely a dry eye in the house.  Those are the kinds of things that belong at a memorial event to our heroes.

What does not belong at these events are the speeches by politicians discussing recent events such as the developing VA scandal, and the recent politically motivated, ‘affirmative action’ like mass Medal of Honor award ceremony conducted by POTUS.  That speech, too long from the moment of the speaker's introduction, came across to just about everyone I spoke with as a combined campaign speech and a plug for that congressman’s party.  My suggestion for all future such events would be to exclude office holders from any official participation or recognition.  If they wish to attend as private citizens and simply blend in, that would be fine; but no one wants or needs to listen to such political drivel on a day set aside to honor our fallen heroes.

There was one talk though that was not driven by any sort of agenda, and that was the heartfelt message delivered by S/Sgt. Brian Mast, US Army.  This young man, this hero, simply spoke of those who he served with.  How he remembered all of their names and where they were from; the training they went through together; the pictures of their wives and husbands, children, girlfriends and boyfriends; their smiles and tears; their plans and aspirations for the future; the jokes they told and pulled on each other; what it meant to him to be around such men and women, and how much he misses each one of them every single day.

Brian spoke so eloquently from the heart; and he delivered his remarks as if talking not only to his own children, but to the countless mothers and fathers, brothers and sisters, wives and husbands, and children of those he served with, and to all of us.  You see, Brian doesn’t have an agenda, and he isn’t looking to score points or get elected.  He is just a very brave soldier who did his very best to protect his friends and comrades, losing his own legs in the process.  All he wants for any of them, those who came before, and those who will follow, is for the rest of us to honor and respect their sacrifice.  I don’t think that’s too much to ask at all.

Execution by heart attack

Written by Fox News on . Posted in National News

Publisher’s note:  When I heard about this execution in Oklahoma gone 'wrong,’ I immediately thought about the scene from "The Green Mile” where an inmate is electrocuted improperly and essentially 'cooks’ in front of the gallery of witnesses.  When asked by his boss what happened, the character portrayed by Tom Hanks simply said "An execution. A successful one.”  "Eduard Delacroix is dead.”

Well, Clayton Lockhart, the man who was convicted of shooting 19-year-old Stephanie Neiman with a sawed-off shotgun and watching as two accomplices buried her alive, is now "successfully" dead.  Sadly, the other convict that was to be executed, Charles Warner, who was convicted of raping and killing his roommate's 11-month-old daughter in 1997, and was to be executed right after Mr. Lockhart, has been given a temporary stay because Mr. Lockhart maybe didn’t die according to the plan.  Excuse me, but neither of these men gave their victims the sort of respect or dignity that some would afford them. Neither of them offered a stay of murder.

To my way of thinking Mr. Warner should have been made to watch the execution of Mr. Lockhart, put on the same sweat soaked gurney, and then injected with the same needle and "heart attack” inducing cocktail that sent Mr. Lockhart to face final judgment.  Or maybe they could have saved time and hooked them both up at the same time.

The bottom line is that my sympathy is with the victims and their families, not with the vile butchers that destroyed those families.

Fox News:  McALESTER, Okla. –  An Oklahoma inmate whose execution was halted Tuesday because the delivery of a new drug combination was botched died of a heart attack, the state Department of Corrections said.  Director Robert Patton said inmate Clayton Lockett died Tuesday after all three drugs were administered.  Patton halted Lockett's execution about 20 minutes after the first drug was administered. He said there was a vein failure.  Lockett was writhing on the gurney and shaking uncontrollably.

The planned execution later Tuesday of a second inmate was postponed.

GA Governor signs sweeping Pro-gun bill

Written by Fox News on . Posted in National News

Publisher’s note:  Very smart.  In a move that very likely could lead the way for similar legislation around the country, Georgia Governor Nathan Deal has signed a sweeping pro-gun bill into law today.

I couldn’t help but notice that some democrats argued against the bill saying that “that allowing guns in more places will not make society safer and may lead to more deaths.”  To those critics I say, check the stats and facts.  More guns create less crime.

Fox News:  Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal on Wednesday signed legislation significantly expanding gun rights in the state.

The bill, described by the National Rifle Association’s lobbying arm as "the most comprehensive pro-gun reform legislation introduced in recent state history," expands the scope of public places where licensed owners are allowed to carry firearms.

The bill makes several changes to state law. It allows those with a license to carry to bring a gun into a bar without restriction and into some government buildings that don't have certain security measures. It also allows religious leaders to decide whether it's OK for a person with a carry license to bring a gun into their place of worship.

Democrats resisted the proposal, although they conceded it would pass in the GOP-dominated House of Representatives. They argued that allowing guns in more places will not make society safer and may lead to more deaths.

I'm not a rat...Al Sharpton

Written by Fox News on . Posted in National News

Publisher’s note:  The one and only Al Sharpton is in the news yet again. This time because he is upset that someone is rekindling the old story of him being a one-time ‘mob informant.

Newsflash Al, first of all, I doubt you’ll find anyone anywhere that cares; and as to your assertion that this is “…a “crazy” attempt to discredit him,” dude, you never had any credibility to start with.  If you did, you'd speak up when blacks assault each other, and when blacks gang up on white men driving pick ups in MI coming to the aide of black children struck by vehicles while playing chicken in traffic.

Go away!

Fox News:  Al Sharpton on Monday dismissed a report portraying him as a one-time mob informant for the FBI, calling the claims old news and a “crazy” attempt to discredit him.

“I don’t see this as news,” Sharpton told FoxNews.com. “This has been brought up three or four times now. I don’t understand. It’s crazy.”

TheSmokingGun.com story describes in detail how Sharpton in the mid-1980s secretly recorded Mafia bosses and other underworld figures for an FBI-NYPD crime task force.

The 12,196-word story -- in which he is referred to as CI-7, short for confidential informant #7 -- says investigators got Sharpton to “flip” after getting him close enough to agreeing to broker a drug deal connected to boxing promoter Don King that they could threaten him with charges.

Though the task force took a “shotgun” approach in giving Sharpton a variety of snitching assignments, they ultimately wanted inroads into the corrupt New York music industry and realized he had the connections, according to the story.

Run to Home Base for Vets

Written by The Patriots Press on . Posted in National News

Well it’s that time of year again.  The annual Boston Red Sox 'Run to Home Plate’ to benefit active military personnel and veterans is kicking off.

The way it works is simple enough.  Runners of all ages and from all walks of life get a chance to either run 9K or walk 3K through scenic and historic Boston, into Kenmore Square, and finally enter Fenway Park and cross the Home Plate finish line.

This is an event not to be missed and supports active military and veterans suffering from PTSD and Traumatic Brain Injuries.  After the race, you can also grab a bite to eat and hang around a bit to watch the Red Sox face off against Kansas City just after 7:00.

On a personal note, I am very proud that my son, Captain David M. DiCrescenzo of the Massachusetts National Guard will once again be participating in this tremendous event, and as publisher of The Patriots Press I am honored to support this very worthy cause.

I would like to ask all of my readers to please consider following this link and helping this cause in any way you can.  On behalf of my son and all those involved with the 'Run to Home Plate’ thank you.
