Te'o and facts: Blaming the Media is that really a fair question?

Written by Starla M. Brown on . Posted in Sports

Manti Te'o and his girlfriend hoax has recently led to the now ever present question about should the media be blamed for running a story that was not fact checked? This question is not going over well with many journalist, and of course not, why should the media be blamed for reporting on a story that Manti in many cases told in a video interview?

Most journalist would think such a poignant story by a college athlete who is in the spotlight would not be a hoax.  It had all the makings of great public relations story, terminally ill girlfriend dies within 6 hours of his grandmother's death, long distance relationship, helping her over the phone as she goes through chemotherapy.  Whatever the real story turns out to be about the relationship between Manti Te'o and Lennay Kekua, the media is not to blame.

Manti has stated in a recent interview that he 'tailored his story' and lied to his father, but many reports say Manti was duped by others involved.  Whether he was part of the hoax or duped in some way by others, it remains to be seen as the facts continue to come out.  The relationship was fictional by most accounts and Manti went to great lengths to encourage teammates to believe there was a relationship between he and Kekua.

I guess the media should have fact checked the girl, but this is a college athlete who spoke on camera at great lengths about her death and their relationship.  Manti Te'o is young, but certainly old enough to have established truth from fiction and right from wrong.  If he sat in the chair with the camera's rolling and the microphone on and lied, it is not the journalist to blame in my opinion for incorrect information, but rather Te'o.  This wasn't some meeting in a parking garage to divulge information that an investigative reporter would then follow through.  This was a college athlete, and story about a girl, a very elaborate story.

No worries though the media is also reporting that he will most likely be drafted by the NFL, and become a millionaire soon.  That appears to be a fact and not a hoax.

Florida Panthers president launches twitter contest

Written by Connor Lanser on . Posted in Sports

Sunrise, Fla. - It was announced Tuesday that Florida Panthers President Michael R. Yormark has launched a Twitter contest in which one lucky fan will win two lower level tickets to each Panthers home game during the 2013 season.

In order to be automatically entered to win the two lower level tickets, fans must answer the trivia question and retweet @PanthersYormark using the hashtag #7thman. The winner will be chosen at least 24 hours before each puck drop. Therefore, if you think you have a shot at winning, don’t make plans for the upcoming game night!

The above contest is part of the Panthers’ new “7th Man” initiative, rightfully so, dedicating the entire season to fans and supporters. Tickets now start as low as $7 a game and fans can log on to Ticketmaster.com or call 954-835-PUCK (7825) to purchase opening night, season or single game tickets.

The official game and radio/television schedules for the 2012-2013 NHL season have yet to be released due to the CBA (Collective Bargaining Agreement) not having yet been ratified by the players. Not to worry, during a press conference, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman revealed that the schedule will be released “immediately” once the players ratify it. The players’ ratification is expected to take place sometime this Saturday.

Although not official, it has been rumored that the Pittsburgh Penguins will open the season on NBC, taking on the Philadelphia Flyers. Typically the Penguins vs. Flyers games have drawn a large audience both in arena and on television/radio.

Which two teams would you like to see open the season? And what kind of trivia questions do you think will be asked of Florida Panther fans?

Texas A&M wins Cotton Bowl in record breaking season for Manziel

If there was doubt among the skeptics on Johnny Manziel living up to the hype that surrounds his Heisman Trophy Award, then his critics have been silenced by his January 4th performance in the Cotton Bowl against Oklahoma.

With 287 passing yards and 229 rushing yards that include 2 TD's, Johnny Football proved he's got game.  The Aggies defeated Oklahoma 41-13 and Manziel's performance was nothing less than spectacular for college football fans.

This freshman quarterback who was the replacement for Ryan Tannehill, who departed Texas A&M to join the NFL after the end of the 2011 season, has broken record after record in regular and post game season play.  Early in the season he broke a total offensive record that prior to that game had been held for 43 years by Archie Manning, one of the SEC's legendary quarterbacks.

Manziel didn't stop there and continued his march towards the Heisman by breaking former winner Cam Newton's SEC record of 4327 yards of total offense.  He became the first freshman to win the Heisman Trophy and the Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award.

The Aggies faced their first year in the tough Southeastern Conference achieving a record of 11-2 (6-2) including last night's win in the Cotton Bowl and an upset over #1 Alabama (29-24) who plays Notre Dame for the BCS Championship game January 7th.

Manziel joins the ranks of a select few to achieve 3000 yards passing and 1000 yards rushing, but he is the first freshman to do so and achieved both earlier in the season than any other player.

If Manziel remains in college football, the Aggies will certainly be the SEC team to watch.  Keep an eye on this promising young athlete, if he stays grounded in football and not fame, we have a legend in the making.
